Campaign to eradicate child beggary

Significant achievement by CHILDLINE teams in Kerala against child labour, child beggary and excellent co-operation with Government. CHILDLINE Calicut along with Anti-Human Trafficking Squad of the Kerala Police rescued 386 children from child labor and child beggary. The children were rescued as part of the anti-child beggary drive initiated by the CHILDLINE and Police Department as part of the implementation of the Juvenile Justice Act.

The Anti-human Trafficking Drive organised by CHILDLINE Calicut, brought out alarming statistics on child labour, child beggary and child sexual harassment. The drive shows that despite the campaign, child labour is still rampant. Most of the children were rescued from hotels, doing menial labour, others were rescued from big households where they worked as domestic help.

Thirty-two cases of child labour were reported by CHILDLINE Calicut during an anti-child labour drive. 30 children were rescued from hotels, factories and households where they were engaged in hard labour. "Two infants were rescued from the bus stand in the city where they were used for begging by their mother" says Subeesh Thiyyampadi, Coordinator, CHILDLINE Calicut.
