For JJ police, there's no crime in hiring a child as domestic help
MUMBAI: CHILDLINE volunteers got a tip off that a child was employed forcibly by a couple at Imambada Haidri building in Bhendi Bazaar. They rushed to the house of Zakia and Rashid Sayyed. While Zakia is a BMC school teacher, her husband is a real estate agent. The child confirmed she had been working in the household for the past five years. She also complained of physical abuse at the hands of her employers

Innocence, interrupted
NEW DELHI: The deviant behaviour meted out to them is numbing. One NGO got a call from a woman who said that a CD left at her doorstep showed her powerful father-in-law in Pune abusing a boy employed as a help by pushing sticks up his anus. In another case, a 15-year-old girl from Maharashtra reported that her father, an alcoholic and drug addict, repeatedly raped her in front of family members. "He would threaten to throttle her if she spoke up," says Nishit Kumar of Childline India Foundation.

Six child labourers rescued in Madhya Pradesh
INDORE: Six children reportedly aged between 8 and 14 years who were being made to work under hazardous conditions at a godown near Dewas Naka were rescued by a team of officers of women and child development department, labour department and CHILDLINE. District programme officer of women and child development department, Vishal Nadkarni said.

INDORE: A joint team of labour department, women and child development department and CHILDLINE rescued six children reportedly aged between 8 and 14 years, who were made to work under hazardous conditions at a godown near Dewas Naka. The district programme officer of women and child development department, Vishal Nadkarni said that the department received information that children were made to pack poisonous pesticide named Thyrum into small packets at the godown.

40% kids saved by CHILDLINE in first six months this year were abuse victims
GURGAON: More than 40% of the cases in which CHILDLINE (1098) intervened during the first six months in 2012 in Gurgaon were related to child abuse. CHILDLINE intervened in as many as 154 cases in the city, out of which 65 cases were reported under the category of "rescue from abuse", which may be physical, sexual or mental. This is followed by cases where children were provided shelter.

Delhi's running for charity
NEW DELHI: Several Delhiites will put on their running shoes for charities of their choice at the upcoming Delhi Airtel Half Marathon. Childline: An NGO that works with street children, child labourers, child victims of flesh trade and those affected by deadly diseases. Madhur Dhupar, 13, will be running to raise `1,50,000 for the NGO.

Delhi government gives NGOs bigger role in child protection framework
NEW DELHI: The Delhi government has decided to give voluntary organizations involved in rescue and rehabilitation of children a larger role in the investigation process and monitoring of cases. The order goes on to add that a home study of the children belonging to states other than Delhi should be coordinated through 'Childline India Foundation'. Assistance of concerned NGOs can also be taken in case there is no 'Childline' service in any district or state.

16 UP minor 'labourers' rescued from Gujarat
ALLAHABAD: District in-charge of CHILDLINE, Santosh Kumar said today that the children - belonging to Allahabad and Chandauli districts - were rescued from a biscuit factory located in Muthia village under Naroda police station area of Ahmedabad in Gujarat on September 20: At least 16 minor children, who were allegedly lured for work in a factory in Gujarat, have been rescued by the Allahabad branch of Childline India Foundation, which runs a helpline for missing children.

Call to create awareness among parents regarding child marriage
SALEM: As per law, it is a cognizable offence and a non-bailable one, with parents and persons who solemnize the child marriage being given two years imprisonment if found guilty. AMRITSAR: Soma, who is believed to be around 22 years old, went missing from her native place in Bhoot Bagan, Kanchan Nagar, District Burdwan, West Bengal in October 2011. Somehow, she reached Pathankot and was located by CHILDLINE, Pathankot wandering aimlessly a few months back. Because of her mental condition, child line contacted local Vidya Sagar Institute of Mental Health, so that Soma could be given the right treatment.

Police rescue 14-year-old boy abandoned
THRISSUR: The Mannuthy police have rescued a 14-year-old boy hailing from Tamil Nadu who claimed to be an assistant in an inter-state truck and was abandoned for no reason by the truck driver at Mullakkara on National Highway 47.The police handed the child over to the CHILDLINE Thrissur from where he was shifted to the children's home after being produced before the Child Welfare Committee.

Baby rescued
BERHAMPUR: CHILDLINE rescued a one-and-a-half month old girl from a person at Baguli Street in Berhampur. Ishwara Rao had been taking care of the child since Wednesday, the activists. Rao said the mother of the baby had left the baby in his house on Wednesday. He, however, did not spell out the address of the woman.

17 kids rescued from zari units in Ramol
AHMEDABAD: Seventeen children were rescued from a zari manufacturing unit in Ramol on Thursday. The children, who were all between 8 and 13 years of age, had been trafficked from villages of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. They were rescued by Ramol police on a complaint filed by Childline India Foundation, an NGO that works for children.

Kovai school teacher helps class IX girl take on rapist
COIMBATORE: Government school teacher in Coimbatore has set an example in crisis intervention in child abuse by helping one of her girl students to take on a man who had sexually abused her. On learning about the teenager's plight, the teacher called the Childline helpline (1098) and briefed them about the incident. Volunteers of the Childline passed on the information to us,".

Children who fled home handed back to parents
INDORE: Two children who developed a habit of fleeing from home, just for fun, were handed back to their parents by the Childline, NGO after learning about them. The children were picked up by the police while they were consuming whitener for intoxication. Police had handed over the two to the Childline, where the NGOs tried to locate their parents.

'Future of the country depends on education system'

Child marriage: parents arrested
NAMAKKAL: Police on Friday arrested the parents of an under-aged bride, the groom and his father of Namagiripettai in Rasipuram Taluk for performing the child marriage recently. It is learnt that the first attempt to get the groom married to a 14-year-old girl of Salem was foiled by the CHILDLINE Salem. Director of the Childline in Namakkal S.L. Sathiya Nesan told The Hindu that the Salem Childline stopped the child from going to Namagiripettai where the marriage was to be performed.

Two arrested for child trafficking in Ganjam dist
BERHAMPUR: Trafficking of children from tribal districts of southern Odisha continues unabated despite frequent crackdowns. Two persons were arrested for trafficking minor tribal girls from Ganjam's Digapahandi area on Wednesday. Middlemen Brunda Gamango and Marka Dalabehera were nabbed after Gurubada Sabara, father of one of the rescued girls lodged an FIR, IIC of Digapahandi S K Gantayat.

CHILDLINE Advisory Board takes stock of helpline service
KARAIKAL: Four girls have been rescued from child marriage since the institution of ChildLine services here in the district. The functioning of the 24x7 ChildLine toll free number 1098 was reviewed by the CHILDLINE Advisory Board that met for the first time here on Thursday under the chairmanship of Collector J.Ashok Kumar.

Police rescue three minor beggars in Gurgaon
GURGAON: Three children who were being forced to beg on the streets by their parents were rescued by the police on Monday. Labour department raid helps rescue child worker from hotel
Nashik: A teenaged child labourer was rescued from a hotel near Kulkarni Garden by CHILDLINE 1098' with the help of the assistant labour commissioner and volunteers from the Women and Child Welfare Cell. An FIR has been registered and the boy is now at the government observation home. Acting on a tip-off, Childline volunteers had visited Hotel Heramb near Kulkarni Garden and found that the child was working at the establishment.

Walking along for a cause
BANGALORE: Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies, Bengaluru along with the citizens of Koramangala, Bengaluru in collaboration with CHILDLINE India Foundation organizing a Walk-a-thon on August 12 in Koramangala, HONDA, which has been at the forefront of the fight against child labour, has lent its support to the initiative.

Two girls found abandoned in train
AMBALA: Two girls aged five and three years were on Saturday found abandoned in a train, with police suspecting that abject poverty may have forced their parents to leave them behind.The girls were found weeping inconsolably in Haridwar- Ganganagar Express. The railway police later handed over the girls to Child Line volunteers, an NGO which takes care of abandoned children and destitute.

Child workers rescued from college canteens near Namakkal
NAMAKKAL: Six boys in the age group of 10 to 14 years were rescued during a raid that was jointly organised by officials from the Labour Department, Childline, National Child Labour Project and the Health Department on Tuesday. Three boys were working in the canteens of a group of education institutions near Namakkal while the other three were employed in a bakery opposite to the institution. The raid was conducted based on a telephone call made by a student of the institution to CHILDLINE.

CHILDLINE comes to schools
KOZHIKODE: CHILDLINE is set to make its activities more effective with the 'Childline clubs' launched in the Kozhikode educational district recently. The clubs work in association with the school vigilance committees which are very active in the district. The club in every school consists of 10 members, all selected from the school vigilance committee.

WHO picks Nashik NGO for training project
NASHIK: CHILDLINE India Foudnation is one of 15 non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in the country to be selected for World Health Organization's (WHO) Life Skills Training project. WHO had entrusted All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, with the task of studying the increasing trend of substance abuse in slum and street children, which the institute's psychiatric department had been researching for the past one year.

One arrested for trafficking kids
BERHAMPUR: Police arrested a person for luring 52 children from Mohana area in Gajapti district to Digapahandi in Ganjam district with the promise of providing them a good education. Nine more are still in the custody of Berhampur CHILDLINE and they will be united with their parents through the CWC after their address is found, said an activist of the organization.

Home reunites 165 kids with families
CHENNAI: Health camps, birthday parties and Sunday cinemas are regular occurrences at the 57-year-old government home for boys in Royapuram. In the last six months, 165 children, who were rescued by the child-line helpline (1098) and social workers, have been restored to their families by the home staff. Home superintendent Glory Gunaseeli proudly recollected that a group from the home had won a cash prize of Rs. 50,000 in a city-level art and theatre programme.

DIMAPUR: CHILDLINE Dimapur conducted an 'Open Forum 'on July 17 at Ura Villa Colony, Walford. Minor escapes after forcible marriage
TRICHY: A 17-year-old minor girl escaped from the custody of her family after she was forced into marriage to a 27-year-old youth. The girl was later handed over to Childline, Trichy where she was given protection till Tuesday. As per a direction from the Manapparai judicial magistrate court, Childline produced the girl before the child welfare committee, Trichy. The girl will now be given shelter by the child welfare committee, said A Albert Manoharan, co-ordinator of Childline.

Boy branded on cheeks for returning late from market
BAHRAMPORE: An eight-year-old boy working as a domestic help was allegedly branded with a heated spatula by a housewife for being late in returning from market in this town in Murshidabad district. Hearing the child's screams, locals intervened and informed about the incident to local NGO 'Childline'. The NGO took the boy to state-run home Ananda Ashram, which admitted him to a hospital, District Child Welfare Committee president Sirajul Islam said.

CHILDLINE to launch Vigilance committees to help tackle child marriage issue
THRISSUR: In a bid to prevent child marriages in the district, CHILDLINE is planning to launch 'Child Marriage Vigilance Committees' at the block level. As a first step in this direction, a vigilance committee will be formed in Pazhayannur block from where child marriages are frequently reported. "Prior to launching these committees, we will conduct a survey in schools to take the estimate of drop outs and incidents of child marriage," said M C Jomon, Coordinator, CHILDLINE Thrissur.

Found in Ahmedabad, untraceable in Indore
INDORE: Misadventure of a five-year-old Indore boy has landed him in trouble, far away from his home in Ahmedabad. Ajay (5) is presently under the care of CHILDLINE Ahmedabad. He was found by GRP, Ahmedabad in a train. The boy told the police that his home is in Juni Indore area. He said he is the son of Mahesh Balai.

Lure of jobs lands children in a mess
CHENNAI: When 34 boys fled the Government's Children Home for Boys at Royapuram here last week, and most of them were rounded up soon after, it appeared to be just another breach of security in such institutions. The nine were rescued by Childline, an organisation working for the welfare of children in need of protection, near the Chennai Central Station last week.

Second batch of rescued kids return home
BERAHAMPUR: "We suspect more children from remote villages in tribal-dominated Gajapati and Kandhamal districts are languishing in other states in the name of free and good education. The government should take steps to identify them and to bring them back to Odisha," said director of Child Line, Berhampur, Sudhir Sabat.

Child labour: Over 40 cases still pending
NOIDA: Activists maintain that even though this practical problem is real, it can be easily dealt with through proper cooperation. "The creation of a mechanism that allows for greater cooperation between the police and the labour department is essential so that information about a raid doesn't leak out and more children can be rescued," said Satya Prakash, FXB Suraksha-Childline, the NGO that filed the complaint about the 12-year-old boy's case.

HC keeps petitions on Child Diksha
MUMBAI: In March 2004, a 'Diksha' ceremony in which a minor girl renounced the material world had given rise to a public debate among child rights activists on this practice. It was brought to the attention of the CWC by Childline, an NGO.In July 2006, the High Court had directed the CWC to find out whether the young girl had taken diksha voluntarily or had been forced to do so.

1,000 children rescued from abuses by Childline
KOCHI: Childline centres have come to the rescue of 1,100 children who were subjected to abuses of various kinds in 11 districts in the State during the 2011-12 financial year. The children rescued had been subjected to sexual, physical, mental, and emotional abuse. The Childline centre in Malappuram, which intervened to rescue 233 such children, topped the list followed by the centres in Kasargod and Thrissur that rescued 176 children each

Child abuse cases coming out of the closet
INDORE: The 24-hour Childline service, working for the children in distress, has been receiving complaints from the victims and their parents. A similar case was reported from Mhow where a schoolgirl was molested by a family friend. The incident took place some two years ago, but came to the fore only after telecast of the episode. The family called up Childline, Indore, and provided the details of the person in question. "We are doing our best to trace the accused in this case" Deepesh said.

Gajapati district drive against trafficking
BERHAMPUR: Eighteen children from the district, who were rescued from a church in Tamil Nadu recently, were handed over to their parents on Friday. Child rights activists claimed several other children from the state are still languishing in various parts of the country. "Whereabouts of several children from Gajapati and Kandhamal is not known yet, most of them have been lured away by traffickers with the promise of free education," said Sudhir Sabat, convener of Odisha Childline Network.

No schooling for trafficked kids
BHUBANESWAR: Satapathy, a volunteer with NGO Childline, and integrated child protection scheme (ICPS) state consultant (Unicef) Pradip Patra had been to Coimbatore. However, the duo returned on Friday evening without bringing these children as the Tamil Nadu government was "reluctant" to send the group, with the two volunteers. "They said since there are large numbers of girls, the TN government will send them with proper police protection soon," Satapathy said.

15-yr-old abducted, beaten up
NAGPUR: A 15-year-old boy was allegedly abducted and badly beaten by his landlord and another man after he refused to give them his elder brother's cell phone number. The police also treated the matter casually. It only came to only after NGO Childline came to know of the incident."He is still not able to open his right eye. If the head injury were any deeper, it would have cost his life. Police should have slapped an offence of causing hurt and abduction," said Rekha Barahate, secretary of Childline."

Case filed but no action against factory owner yet
JALANDAR: To a query, he said: "Sham Lal is at large. Efforts are on to nab him." Sarita, city coordinator for Child Line, Union Ministry for Women and Child Development, said she would take up the matter with the police.Nazim, a resident of Bashirpura locality here, was engaged by a sweeper to collect garbage.

Couple held for torturing domestic help
GURGAON: The Vasant Vihar police got the child admitted to Safdarjung Hospital and informed the Gurgaon police. The Gurgaon police took custody of the child after he was discharged from the hospital yesterday. After reaching Gurgaon, the Gurgaon police apprised Childline of the matter. A team from Childline counselled the child and arranged for his shelter at a children's home. The Childline Shakti Vahini team is trying to get the boy reunited with his family in West Bengal.

Teachers strip, thrash class IV girl in Kerala
NEW DELHI: Two teachers, including headmistress, of the Kerala English Medium School at Karimbil near Tirurangadi have been accused of stripping a student while searching for lost money.Reports state, some students told the Childline official that a few of their classmates were prompted to say that the headmistress stripped them while searching for money.Official said that they would continue their investigation to find out whether any kind of child abuse occurred.

Five-year-old boy with speech impairment finally reunited with family
JAMMU: Jojo, a five-year child, could not express his feelings in words, his gestures conveyed the emotions he was going through after being reunited with his parents after almost three months. Childline Jammu, an NGO dedicated to restoring missing children to their parents, was instrumental in locating Jojo's parents. The case was unique, as Jojo could not speak anything but his name due to a congenital disorder affecting his vocal cord.

Newborn girl rescued from garbage bin
CHENNAI:A newborn baby girl, found abandoned near a garbage bin in Kovilambakkam near Tambaram, was rescued and handed over to a welfare home on Saturday. Latha Subburaj, a homemaker, heard the cries of the baby near a garbage bin near her home in Viduthalai Nagar, Sunnambu Kulathur in Kovilambakkam Village Panchayat. She took the child home and informed Pallikaranai police station.
She went along with the policemen to Pallikaranai police station where personnel called Childline 1098.

Helping others kick addiction is mission possible
BHOPAL: For the two children, around 10 years of age then, addiction to drugs gradually became a thing of the past. Aaramb, which works for implementation of Childline project under the Union Ministry of Women and Child Development, motivated them to join school. The two attended day school at the NGO's Indrapuri centre and another NGO, Bachpan's night school at Bajaria in the old city successfully completing their primary education.

NGOs use media to raise funds
MUMBAI: "Television shows help verify the credibility of the organisation in the minds of the people," said Nishit Kumar from Childline India Foundation, which appeared on a television show related to child sexual abuse last month. NEW DELHI: A 12-year-old girl, who was allegedly being trafficked here to work as a domestic for a a retired government official, was rescued this morning, a rights NGO claimed today.After coming to know the background, the BBA alerted the Anti-Human Trafficking Unit of Delhi Police and based on the complaint, police officers and volunteers from Childline came to the rescue of the girl.

Chained to a window grill with hardly any food
WARANGAL: The incident came to light only on Saturday evening when an unknown person called up the Childline, a toll-free number of the Child Welfare Committee, and informed about the plight of the children in the railway police control room. A team of volunteers led by committee chairperson Dr Mamata Raghuveer went to the railway station, along with the local media persons, and noticed that the children were put up in a pathetic state with their legs chained to the window grill.

Child found abandoned
KOZHIKODE: A five-year-old boy was found abandoned in the women's compartment of the Bangalore-Yeswanthpur Express. The Railway police handed over the child to the Childline officials. The boy gave his name as Vishnu his mother's as Renjini. But he could not pass any information regarding his address or phone number, the police said.The child, dressed in a black jeans and a black t-shirt with stripes has six fingers on both his hands.

14-year-old resists early marriage; father remanded to police custody
Yet another teenager has resisted attempts by her family to marry her off at an early age, adding to the numbers of girls who have done so in the State's Purulia district. "The girl, a resident of Beldi village under the Arsa police station of the district called up Childline India Foundation and informed them that she was being forced into marriage. Subsequently we intervened and rescued her," said C. Sudhakar, the district Superintendent of Police, to The Hindu over telephone.

Gurgaon couple in dock for torturing minor domestic help
GURGAON: A Gurgaon couple was arrested for allegedly torturing their domestic help. The 16-year-old victim alleged that the couple used to confine him in the house and even beat him up regularly. After the boy was brought back to Gurgaon, the city police informed Childline, an NGO, which counselled the victim and shifted him to a children's home. The NGO spokesperson claimed that the boy was trafficked from his native place and sold off to the placement agency. The couple, meanwhile, was produced in court on Thursday and later released on bail.

CHILDLINE centres to be set up in all districts
RANCHI: Recently the Ranchi-based Childline - a helpline present all over the country for women and children -- came across a case from Giridih in which the victim accused a local doctor of sexually abusing almost 50 underage girls in the name of treatment. The victim said the doctor targeted poor young girls claiming to provide free treatment to them.

Award to Childline
BANGALORE: Childline India Foundation, which runs the helpline 1098, will receive a special award for its work on eradication of child labour, by the Department of Labour, Karnataka. It will receive the award at the World Day Against Child Labour function at Bangalore on Tuesday.

10-year-old domestic help rescued
VIJAYAWADA: A 10-year-old girl being forced to do domestic work in a metro was rescued by officials of the National Child Labour Project and Childline at Purushotamapatnam village near Gannavaram. Kiralapaka Kumari (name changed) has three sisters and father passed away recently. Unable to make ends meet the girl's mother put her to work in the house of one Prabhakara Rao in Gannavaram.

INDORE: Harassed by a local 'influential' person, two panic-stricken children approached Childline, an NGO working for the welfare of children. NEW DELHI: A minor was rescued from a businessman's house in east Delhi on Saturday after a neighbour found the boy crying in the balcony and called the child helpline.The incident was reported from Kallol Apartments in IP Extension. The neighbour, a child rights activist, called the child helpline on 1098, following which a team of police officers and child rights activists from DBS Childline rescued the minor from the house.
